How to Prepare and Move an Upright Piano

Pianos are heavy and can be challenging and risky to move, especially without the help of professionals. While it is always recommended to hire piano movers, for those determined to move a piano themselves or unable to hire professionals for any reason, there are steps that can be taken to minimize the risk of injury or damage during the move. With the right equipment, careful planning, and willing helpers, you can move your piano to a different room or a new home.

Confirm the Weight and Path

Before you begin, consider hiring a specialty moving service to handle the heavy lifting. Pianos can weigh anywhere from 300 to 1,400 pounds, and professional movers have the tools and experience to transport them safely. If you choose to do the move yourself, be sure to measure the piano, doorways, hallways, and staircases to ensure there is enough clearance and to determine the best orientation for fitting the piano through your home. You will also need at least four helpers, heavy-duty straps, a dolly, and protective coverings such as blankets or padding.

Protect the Piano from Damage

To protect and secure the piano, close and lock the keyboard lid and secure the top. If possible, disassemble the legs with a screwdriver, ensuring that your moving team is holding the piano while the legs are removed. Wrap the piano in protective coverings and secure them with packing tape or bungee cords.

Moving the Piano

To move the piano, you will need a dolly or piano board (a hardwood board with slots for moving straps). If you are moving an upright piano, you can use moving straps and a dolly. For a baby grand piano, you will likely need a piano board and moving straps. When lifting and moving the piano, be sure to use proper lifting techniques and keep your back straight to avoid injury. Once the piano is in the moving truck or van, secure it in place with straps or moving blankets.

After the Move

After the move, it is generally recommended to tune the piano, as the moving process and new environment can affect its sound and performance. With careful planning and the right equipment and helpers, you can successfully move your piano without any injuries or regrets.
